Should I Have an Oil Boiler in My Home

Oil boilers are not always the first choice in central cities for instance, but are particularly popular in properties in the more rural or remote locations where the gas grid isn’t available. They used to have a poor reputation for being expensive to run but with technological advances over the last decade, modern oil burners are far more energy efficient these days. Oil is actually a more efficient fuel than gas, so in terms of energy per unit you’ll get a better return. However, with our country’s oil prices fluctuating and escalating outside our control so much, it has heightened the need for oil burners to make the best use of the oil they are using.

They have similar efficiency rates you’d reach with a gas boiler, we’re pleased to say that oil boilers are the most efficient they’ve ever been, especially when using reputable brands such as Worcester or Bosch or Grant oil boilers who constantly research and invest in improving the efficiency of their range. Admittedly, there are fewer oil boilers to choose from than with gas or LPG for instance, but we still have a great selection here that we can discuss with you when upgrading your oil heating system.

Which type of Oil Boiler is best for my home?
We’ve already mentioned that oil prices change often, so this highlights just how important it is to make sure it’s efficient oil you’re paying for! There’s never a one-size-fits-all with decisions like this, so there are lots of things to think about when choosing your boiler including the size of your property, how your family needs to heat water, age of property etc. This is before you even mention whether you’re looking at oil combination condensing boilers or oil regular condensing boilers!

Oil Boilers for Smaller Properties
As with gas boilers, the types of oil boilers don’t vary too much, it’s mostly how they are fuelled that differs though we do know that oil combi boilers are a little slower to provide hot water than gas combi boilers. Because of this, most oil boilers have an additional internal hot water store to supply domestic hot water instantly as you’d expect.

To provide your hot water, oil combi boilers are still the same in that they are always on standby so that when the hot tap is turned on, your boiler jumps into action and heats the water through a heat exchanger providing you with hot water, any time of day at your request. This makes them an efficient option as you’re not needing to use energy to keep a huge hot water tank hot when it’s not being used. Talking of tanks, an oil combi boiler can really save your valuable space as you won’t need water cylinders or tanks elsewhere in your home for storing the pre-heated water.

Oil Boilers for Larger or Older Properties

It may seem a no-brainer to opt for a combi boiler when you hear their benefits, but if you have a larger home with multiple showers that may be in use at one time for instance, a combi boiler can’t cope with these demands. A combi boiler will also reduce the heat going into your central heating system while the hot water is being used, so you will notice a difference to the warmth of your home. This is perfect if you live alone in a small modern flat of course but not so useful in an older home containing a larger family.

This is where conventional or regular oil boilers will be more suitable to meet the demands of a larger household. The larger house will also be able to accommodate the heating system, hot water cylinder and cold water storage tank. It’s worth noting too that if you already have an older home with these elements in place, it would be more cost effective to simply replace your old conventional oil boiler with a new one rather than all of the components. This way you maximise what you already have, as well as benefiting from the efficiency of the modern oil boilers.

Regardless of whether you opt for an oil combi boiler or conventional oil boiler there are other factors to consider such as your storage tank outside and where that can be located. If you take a look over here (LPG BOILER PAGE link) you’ll see there are some similarities with oil storage to LPG storage. We really can’t emphasise enough that you should seek expert advice before making your decisions so if you get in touch with us for we can guide you through your initial budget, your on-going costs and your available space to make the right decision.

Safety First

Last but definitely not least, as with all types of boilers, it's advisable to have your oil boiler serviced each year to ensure its safety and efficiency which any of our Gas Safe Registered engineers can help you with. This is particularly important if you have installed a new boiler, as it’s usually a condition of your warranty. If you are unable to provide certificates showing you’ve maintained your boiler reasonably you may not be able to claim under the warranty should an issue occur.

Here at Merseyside Central Heating we know that choosing the right boiler can be a daunting task so give us a call and we’ll talk you through what you need to consider within your home. In some instances you may qualify for some funding from the government so we can discuss this with you too. We’ve been helping people make the right choices with their homes for over 45 years so we like to think our customer service is as warm as your home is!
